Methodology
I am a colorist in all senses. There are no formulas that I follow to achieve a desired outcome. I might make references in my work, inspired by other artists through the centuries for their colors choices and dynamic compositions. I do not work with a personal pallet. I like to experiment with many different color combinations. I can work with a large assortment of pigments or contain myself to eight or less colors. This small pallet, incidentally, can be very colorful and harmonious. My paintings are often a composition of thin and thick application of paint. I want the viewer to be aware of the painted surface as well as a realistic depiction of the subject. My degree in art history and my passion for visiting art museums all over the world has heightened my creativity, enthusiasm and knowledge for creating my own unique paintings of depth and character.
- The size and medium of the painting is determined.
- I have the client come for initial conversation about their attire. After we’ve spoken, I ask them to pose in various positions and outfits. This affords me an opportunity to get to know the client better through drawings and color studies. After reviewing all the possible options, we collaborate and decide upon final a pose including the attire and background elements. I always paint with one light source, which is always natural north light.
- The client comes for a color sketch. If they have chosen pastel, it can be of any size, whether pastel canvas or pastel paper. Oils are painted on fine grade Belgian linen to size specifications. The artist then makes a more detailed color sketch, paying special attraction to the background colors, hair and skin tones (which no camera could capture) and the color of the outfit.
- From my sketches, I determine the layout of the painting. At that point, the client comes for the sitting. The client and I discuss in the first sitting about how many sittings it would take to complete the painting. That could be anywhere from three to six sittings, if not more. Artist and client decide the schedule of the sitting. I explain my technique if requested.
The following examples show how color is used in layers to build depth and add vibrancy to my work:
